How to Get Hunter Education Certified in Colorado

March 14, 2026

Colorado allows hunters age 10 and older to complete hunter education entirely online — no in-person field day required. The course is approved by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) and certified by IHEA-USA.

How to Get Certified

  • Minimum age: 10 years old
  • Format: 100% online, no field day
  • Duration: 4-6 hours at your own pace
  • Certificate: Issued immediately upon passing; never expires

Youth Hunting

Colorado allows youth hunters ages 12-15 to purchase a small game license, and ages 12+ to apply for big game licenses. All first-time hunters need hunter education regardless of age. Youth must be accompanied by a mentor age 18+ while hunting.

Hunting in Colorado

Colorado is renowned for having the largest elk herd in the world. The state also offers excellent mule deer, pronghorn, mountain goat, bighorn sheep, moose, and bear hunting across its Rocky Mountain landscapes. Big game tags are allocated through a draw system, so plan ahead.
