How to Get Hunter Education Certified in Illinois

March 14, 2026

Illinois requires all first-time hunters to complete an approved hunter education course. The state offers online-only certification for adults 18 and older, while youth hunters must attend an in-person field day.

Certification Paths

  • Ages 18+: Complete the entire course online with a virtual field day component. No in-person attendance required.
  • Under 18: Complete the online course, then attend a 6-8 hour in-person field day with hands-on firearm handling and practical exercises.

The course is approved by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and certified by IHEA-USA.

Hunting in Illinois

Illinois is known for outstanding white-tailed deer hunting, consistently producing trophy-class bucks. The state also offers excellent waterfowl hunting along the Illinois and Mississippi River corridors, plus wild turkey, pheasant, and small game.
