How to Get Hunter Education Certified in New York

New York allows hunters age 11 and older to complete hunter education entirely online — no in-person field day required. The course is approved by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and certified by IHEA-USA.

How to Get Certified

  • Minimum age: 11 years old
  • Format: 100% online, no field day
  • Duration: Approximately 4-6 hours at your own pace
  • Certificate: Issued immediately upon passing; never expires

Hunting in New York

New York offers excellent deer hunting across regions from the Adirondacks to Long Island, plus black bear, wild turkey, waterfowl, and small game on extensive public lands. Youth hunters ages 12-15 can hunt deer with a firearm when accompanied by a licensed adult.
