How to Get Hunter Education Certified in Connecticut
Connecticut requires all first-time hunters to complete an approved hunter education course, which includes both an online component and an in-person field day for all students regardless of age. The course is approved by Connecticut DEEP Bureau of Natural Resources (DEEP) and certified by IHEA-USA.
How the Process Works
- Complete the online course — Study at your own pace, covering firearm safety, Connecticut hunting regulations, wildlife conservation, and ethical hunting practices (approximately 4-6 hours).
- Attend an in-person field day — Demonstrate safe firearm handling, practice live-fire shooting, and pass a skills evaluation under certified instructors.
- Receive your certificate — Your Connecticut Hunter Education Certificate is issued upon passing both components and never expires.
All students must complete an 8-hour in-person field day after the online course to receive certification.
You do not need to bring your own firearm or ammunition to the field day — equipment is provided. Wear weather-appropriate outdoor clothing and closed-toe shoes.
Age Requirements
The minimum age to enroll in Connecticut hunter education is 10 years old. Children under 10 may hunt only when accompanied by a licensed, certified adult hunter as required by Connecticut law.
