Can I Hunt in Another State With My Hunter Ed Certificate?

March 14, 2026

Yes. If your hunter education certificate was earned through an IHEA-approved course, it's recognized in all 50 U.S. states and Canadian provinces. You do not need to retake hunter education when you travel to hunt in a different state.

How Reciprocity Works

The International Hunter Education Association (IHEA-USA) sets national standards for hunter education. Courses approved by IHEA and your state's wildlife agency meet these standards, and other states honor that certification through reciprocity agreements. This means a hunter education certificate earned in Texas is valid in Montana, a Florida certificate works in Colorado, and so on.

What You Need to Hunt Out of State

While your hunter education certificate transfers, you'll still need to:

  • Purchase a non-resident hunting license in the state where you plan to hunt
  • Follow that state's hunting regulations — season dates, bag limits, legal methods, and weapon restrictions vary by state
  • Carry proof of certification — bring your hunter education card or have your certificate number available
  • Complete any state-specific requirements — some states require additional permits for certain species (elk tags, waterfowl stamps, etc.)

How to Verify Your Certificate

If you completed your course online, your certificate is typically stored in a digital database. Most course providers offer online access to your certificate, and many states can look up your certification by name and date of birth. If you've lost your physical card, contact the state wildlife agency where you were originally certified — they can issue a replacement or provide your certification number.

International Reciprocity

IHEA-approved certificates are also recognized across Canadian provinces. If you're planning a hunting trip to Canada, your U.S. hunter education certificate will satisfy their hunter education requirements. However, you'll still need to comply with Canadian firearms import laws and provincial licensing requirements.

What If My Certificate Isn't IHEA-Approved?

If you took a hunter education course that wasn't IHEA-approved, some states may not recognize it. To ensure your certification is accepted everywhere, always choose an IHEA-approved course provider. All courses linked through our state directory are IHEA-approved.

Planning a hunt in a new state? Check that state's specific requirements to make sure you have everything you need.
