How to Get Hunter Education Certified in Iowa

March 14, 2026

Iowa requires all first-time hunters to complete an approved hunter education course. The state offers online-only certification for ages 18 and older, while younger hunters must also attend an in-person field day. The course is approved by Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and certified by IHEA-USA.

Certification Paths

  • Ages 18+: Complete the entire course online. No in-person field day required. Your certificate is issued immediately upon passing.
  • Ages 11 to 17: Complete the online course, then attend an in-person field day for hands-on skills evaluation and live-fire exercises.
  • Under age 11: Cannot be independently certified. Must hunt under the supervision of a licensed, certified adult.

Students 18 and older can complete the course entirely online. Youth hunters under 18 must attend an in-person field day.

Age Requirements

The minimum age to enroll in Iowa hunter education is 11 years old. Children under 11 may hunt only when accompanied by a licensed, certified adult hunter as required by Iowa law.

Your Certificate Works Everywhere

Because the Iowa course is IHEA-approved, your certificate is recognized in all other U.S. states and Canadian provinces through reciprocity. Get certified once and hunt anywhere.

Hunting in Iowa

Iowa is widely regarded as one of the top trophy white-tailed deer states in the nation. The state also offers excellent pheasant, quail, wild turkey, and waterfowl hunting.
