How to Get Hunter Education Certified in Michigan

March 14, 2026

Michigan requires all hunter education students to complete both an online course and an in-person field day, regardless of age. The course is approved by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR).

How to Get Certified

  1. Complete the online course — 4-6 hours, self-paced. You'll receive a completion voucher valid for 12 months.
  2. Attend a field day — Demonstrate safe firearm handling, complete live-fire exercises, and pass a skills evaluation. Do not bring your own firearms — equipment is provided.
  3. Minimum age: 12 years old

Hunting in Michigan

Michigan offers white-tailed deer hunting in both peninsulas, plus black bear, elk (by lottery), wild turkey, and outstanding waterfowl hunting along the Great Lakes. Your certificate works in all other states.
