How to Get Hunter Education Certified in North Dakota

March 14, 2026

North Dakota requires all first-time hunters to complete an approved hunter education course, which includes both an online component and an in-person field day for all students regardless of age. The course is approved by North Dakota Game and Fish Department (NDGF) and certified by IHEA-USA.

How the Process Works

  1. Complete the online course — Study at your own pace, covering firearm safety, North Dakota hunting regulations, wildlife conservation, and ethical hunting practices (approximately 4-6 hours).
  2. Attend an in-person field day — Demonstrate safe firearm handling, practice live-fire shooting, and pass a skills evaluation under certified instructors.
  3. Receive your certificate — Your North Dakota Hunter Education Certificate is issued upon passing both components and never expires.

All students must complete a hybrid course with 7-10 hours online and 6 hours of in-person classroom time, regardless of age.

You do not need to bring your own firearm or ammunition to the field day — equipment is provided. Wear weather-appropriate outdoor clothing and closed-toe shoes.

Age Requirements

The minimum age to enroll in North Dakota hunter education is 12 years old. Children under 12 may hunt only when accompanied by a licensed, certified adult hunter as required by North Dakota law.

Your Certificate Works Everywhere

Because the North Dakota course is IHEA-approved, your certificate is recognized in all other U.S. states and Canadian provinces through reciprocity. Get certified once and hunt anywhere.

Hunting in North Dakota

North Dakota is renowned for pheasant, sharp-tailed grouse, and waterfowl hunting with millions of acres accessible through the PLOTS program. Excellent deer hunting is also available.
